Most retired baby boomers have tried their hands at a variety of home-based careers and businesses, from writing to consulting to even crafting, either full time or part time. Yes, more and more baby boomers are now choosing to work from home, either starting their own businesses or blending their post-retirement leisure time with their already established careers. This can be a daunting aspect that requires loads of direction, motivation and of course tweaking!

So, if you’re contemplating jumping off the corporate ladder to start your own business, or if you have just retired and need that extra income, then here are a few tips to help make you work better from home:

• List the necessities – Even if you are only working part time, you must make sure that you have everything that you need at hand. Nothing is more irritating that spending hours looking for a paper clip or a postage stamp or the stapler. Make a list of all the essential items that you require and take a trip down to your local office supply store just to stock up.

• Get Professional – When working from home, get a separate business phone number. Or, you could use your cell phone especially for business calls. A FAX line is another useful option.

• Get Computer Savvy – Now that you are working from home, its time to replace that old virus infested desktop computer with a trendier, faster laptop to save space. Check out the latest copier machines and all-in-one inkjet printers. It is unbelievable how an all-in-one would fit comfortable on your work desk and still not take up too much space.

• Get good quality chairs – If your work involves a lot of sitting, then getting comfortable furniture is very important. Good quality chairs will allow you to sit for hours on end at your desk without really straining your neck and back. This could be the best investment you might make, so don’t scrounge.

• Make your workplace pleasant – Make your workplace look appealing. Fill it with things that relax, uplift and inspire you. Choose colors that appeal to you and fill the room with soft lights. Yes, effective lighting makes a difference to breezing through your daily work and meeting deadline, and straining yourself out and getting worked up long before your deadline. Lamplights and soft lights that don’t cast shadows or glare are the best options.

• Keep time aside for Personal calls – All the time you spend working at the desk should be taken seriously. So, never take personal calls while working. Don’t encourage guests and visitors to drop in during working hours and stick to your regular schedule.

• Make a time table for yourself – Make sure that you are isolated from all distractions while working. Don’t take unnecessary breaks and avoid chatting online, or even doing the housework. These distractions could get in the way of your work and render you less productive.

It takes a unique work style and personality to actually carry off the whole ‘working-at-home’ effort

There are a number of considerations that one must go through to buy a new home, particularly one you work in. Anyone who has been through a house sale while living in the house knows about something called “staging.” Space requirements in the new house aside, one issue that may come up is the fact you probably have to sell the house you currently live in while continuing to earn a living.

Part of that process involves removing the excess stuff from your home to make it appear spacious and inviting to potential buyers. This, unfortunately, includes work-related stuff. For some people, work-related material may be a laptop and some paperwork. For me, however, it’s a good portion of the contents of my office! And that’s just the start of uncertainty.

In addition, once the house is actually listed, I will have to be able to vacate the premises at a moment’s notice so potential buyers can come through the house. I suppose it’s a bit like when you work in a coffee shop and the proprietor shoos you away because you’re using the bandwidth and not buying enough coffee. Except in this case, I will be going to find the coffee shop. Fortunately, there’s a Starbucks nearby and my employer pays for T-Mobile Hotspot access.

This kind of unstable home-working situation is, in most cases, likely to be temporary. That being said, here are a few tips for coping with this situation:

1. Know what you can do in what circumstances. Given that you could be interrupted at any point in time and have to move your work location, understand what in your current workload can be done and be prepared to shift to those things when necessary.

2. Try to work only with tools that can be packed up and ready to go at a moment’s notice. That means using your laptop, cell phones, and other portable devices.

3. Have your laptop bag ready to go at a moment’s notice. Have it pre-packed with the essentials–chargers for your laptop and mobile phone, portable peripherals, a power strip–Monster makes this great travel one–and anything else you might need. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to stuff your laptop in there and be ready to go.

4. Consider taking some time off. It’s likely you’ll need some to actually do the move anyway, but if you can, why not take off a little more?
Have you tried working at home while your house is being sold? What kinds of issues did you run into doing this? Post your thoughts and questions in the comments.

Many people are skeptical about how one can choose the right work at home job and make money online, there are a few options that one looking to work online can choose from.
Freelancing as a writer or telephone representive and designer can often earn one tens of thousands of dollars annually, especially if you are well trained and have the skills and the marketing "know how" so that you can constantly find clients.

Affiliate programs where you are paid to promote the products of many companies are also another great way to earn money online. Obviously, if you can create your own product and promote it, that would be the ideal situation as you would be able to keep all revenue that you earn rather than just 10% or 20% of the total sale value.

Still, the most popular way that those who work online are earning a stable income is through the creation of web sites and the sale of advertisement space and the use of programs such as Google AdSense or the Yahoo Publisher network.

For those who have worked to hone their skills in writing or web site design and creation, freelancing is probably the best online job opportunity. It allows them to run all aspects of their business from finding clients, completing the work, and/or subcontracting the work. Although this may be more work than if you worked in a team with a group of people, as a solo freelancer, you keep all of the money you make, rather than splitting it among the members/employees of your company. There are a numbers of freelance opportunities available today.

The Program includes a $7500 credit line,start-up information on over 95 legitimate work at home jobs that pay cash. The business program includes Free Medicine Program,Utility Payments,Reverse Mortgages,Debt Consolidation and Weatherization for the winter plus many more. The program combines all packages into one price plus free business software,it also includes 50 successful free government grant applications that were funded plus your paper work prepared by Government Publications

ASHBURN, Va. — A Loudoun County nonprofit is encouraging its staff to stay home during the week — not because it doesn’t want them in the office, but to save on the rising cost of gasoline.

The National Recreation and Park Association will experiment with a system starting next week.

Its 70 employees will be encouraged to work a four-day week or telecommute instead of driving in the Ashburn offices.

Chuck Wilsker, president of the D.C.-based Telework Coalition, said a survey in 2005 found that 45 million Americans telecommute.

Telecommuting once a week could save 20 percent in fuel consumption, and save money for those living on nonprofit salaries.

The recreation and park association is following a national trend. But some wonder if an employee is as productive working from home.

Many said they are as productive, or even more, because they have fewer distractions and enjoy working from home, so want to prove that the system works.

Today is the second annual National Work from Home Day, where employers are encouraged to transform their homes into offices for the day.
In addition to making employees happier and therefore more productive through aiding the work/life balance, the ability to work away from the office - even occasionally - lessens the burden on our roads and public transport networks, believes Work Wise UK.

‘Although some would suggest this could be an excuse to skive, or to extend the weekend, it has been demonstrated that enabling staff to work from home, even occasionally, increases productivity,’ said Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, the not-for-profit organisation behind National Work from Home Day and Work Wise Week, which kicked off on Wednesday and runs until next Tuesday.

‘BT currently employs 64,000 flexible workers and 11,500 contracted full time home workers. Where it has introduced these "smarter" working practices, it has seen a 20 per cent increase in productivity. Although a real win-win situation is rare in life, working from home, and other similar smarter working practices, do not have a downside. They benefit all parties: more productivity for businesses,

better work-life balance for staff, less congestion for drivers and less over-crowding for public transport users.’

However, despite many companies going public about their positive attitudes towards more home and flexible working, there are still many employers who have failed to see the light.

‘Home working isn’t a new concept, and whilst European companies have embraced it, British organisations still seem reluctant to go the whole hog and make it widely available,’ said Alistair McKinnon, a senior product manager for ntl: Telewest Business.

‘Part of the problem is that home working still has a stigma attached to it - employers fear that staff will watch daytime TV rather than crack on with their work. This is a misconception and the fact is that the home generally offers a more productive working environment, free from the distractions of the office.’

McKinnon added: ‘Staff should be encouraged to work a regular day when they work from home, and the vast changes in communications technology in recent years means that it is perfectly feasible to do so. We believe that National Working from Home day is an excellent initiative and hopefully as a result more businesses will see how home working can benefit both their organisation and their staff.’

What are your views? Are flexible working practices obviously a good thing, or is it unrealistic for companies to support everyone having the option of working from home? Leave your comments via the link below.

1. ESTABLISH BOUNDARIES BETWEEN WORK AND HOME

Schedule how many hours you will spend at work and stay focused on achieving your three or four most important work goals for the week or day. Work hard at work but know when to go home and when you get there, be at home. Spend quality time engaged in self-renewing activities with people you care about. Women who are well-balanced thrive more in both environments.

2. PREPARE THE NIGHT BEFORE

For busy moms and women, every minute in the morning is precious. Get out the door faster by preparing the night before. Pre-pack lunches, backpacks and purses; coordinate bathroom schedules; plan and lay out clothes; and review the following day’s schedule before going to bed at a good time.

3. TAKE TIME FOR WEEKLY AND DAILY PLANNING

Set aside 20 minutes each week and 10 minutes each day to plan your time and schedule, including the most important goals, tasks and appointments. Reviewing your week and day can also give you added insight as to how you can better manage your time.

4. WRITE IT DOWN

Remembering everything without recording it is a challenge that eludes even the brightest minds. Use a planning tool, either a paper planner or planning software and a handheld device, to enter your goals, tasks, appointments and contacts.

5. GROUP LIKE TASKS

Grouping similar tasks or tasks that can be completed together will maximize your time. If you have to revisit the same store multiple times for things that could have been purchased the first trip, you are spending not saving time.

6. SAY "NO"

When presented with a new opportunity on which to spend your time, ask yourself, "What is the wisest and best use of my time right now and what do I have to remove from my schedule in order to make time for this?" If the given opportunity does not meet that criterion, appropriately and graciously say, "No."

7. ESTIMATE YOUR TIME

The easiest way to get overwhelmed is by being unrealistic about how long it takes to complete certain tasks. Realistically estimate how long each of your goals or tasks will take to complete and schedule the appropriate amount of time into your planning system.

8. BE FLEXIBLE

Circumstances change, and new opportunities can be both urgent and important. Be flexible and willing to change your schedule and reprioritize it to accomplish something that is most important.

9. ESTABLISH ROUTINES

Guarantee that you make time for what is important by creating routines. Set aside a regular time in the day to spend time with your spouse, kids, or on those activities that are important to you in your life. For example, spend time each night talking with your family about their day or time exercising.

10. MAKE "ME-TIME" A PRIORITY - RENEW YOURSELF

One of the number one complaints women have about their over-packed schedule is the lack of time for self. Self-renewal leads to having a more balanced life. Make time in your schedule for activities (physical health, escape and people) which are renewing and re-energizing.

My payment with AdSense has reached over $1,400 for the month of October and I’m sure proud of it. Who wouldn’t be proud of earning easy money from home with nothing to invest.

With Google AdSense, I struggled, I tested, I analyzed, and I got PAID. My revenue over the months with Google AdSense have been rising exponentially. I have tested the ads in several formats and in several colors and not to my surprise the 336×280 ad format block gave me the most amount of clicks leading to high payouts.

Most publishers don’t get half of what I get every month. I studied and studied and applied methods used by experienced AdSense Publishers. Eventually, I figured out my own method and tripled and quadrupled my adsense earnings. My goal is to reach $400+ day; Steve Pavlina makes $400/day from his blog so why can’t I. His success is my motivation, he broke the barrier so, now I know it’s possible to gain a significant revenue from online.

Most new AdSense publishers are demoralized by the low clicks and low traffic that they receive. The one thing that new publishers has a hard time doing is being patient. A web site will not get millions of hits over night. A web site needs time to grow and be popular on the web. A web site is nothing without visitors; some publishers say “I’m done making the site” and they don’t realize that if they’re done making their site then their site is worthless; a good website is never finished. A site that does not update frequently, usually everyday, will not get many visitors; the site won’t even show up in Google search results. To get visitors, a site must constantly be updated with high-quality content time after time. As the site grows over time the number of visitors will grow and that means more clicks from ads leading to big payouts.

Finding good ideas for working at home seems to be, at a first glance, the first challenge facing any potential internet marketer. I have some good news for you. This article will show you that:

1-This is not your first challenge; you have already overcome your first challenge, and you might not have even noticed it.

2-Finding ideas for working at home is a challenge only if you mixed up the searching priorities. This lies at the heart of this article.

If finding ideas for working at home is not the first challenge, then what is the first challenge? First of all the tense of this question is wrong! Since you are already trying to find ideas for working at home then you have overcome the first challenge.

The first challenge is to realize the fact that you need to establish a home based business. The fact that you are already searching for ideas means that you have already crossed this bridge. This realization is crucial.

Normally when the idea of establishing our own business crosses our minds, we get stuck with the details and obstacles of establishing a traditional business. Once we hit that obstacle we realize that the costs will burry us alive, and the thought becomes a fantasy that we will never be able to achieve.

Once we expand our horizons and realize that a traditional business is not the only way to establish our own business, the skies become the limit and we find ourselves in the midst of abundant alternatives.

With this realization the answer to the next question becomes easy. What is the alternative to a traditional business? Of course a traditional business is one where you need to rent an office, a shop, a warehouse or any other place were you business need to be conducted. Therefore, the alternative to that is to work at home.

Congratulations! You have said it, "I want to work at home." Just by thinking or saying these words you have overcome your first obstacle. This is the tricky part now. If you are not careful with the next steps you follow, you might end up with no business at all.

The words "I want to work at home" bring a lot of energy and excitement into a person’s life and the following steps might not be well planned and therefore, the outcome will not be favorable at all.

Once you are struck with the idea, take a deep breath, sit down for a while, and then ask yourself the following questions:

1-Do I want to have a job working at home?

2-Do I want to establish a business working at home? If the answer is "yes" to this question then:

a.Do I want to sell my own product/service?

b.Do I want to sell other people’s products and services?

Once you get the answers to these questions, then you can start with your search for ideas for working at home without being confused. If you do not make your decision before you start the search, the outcome of your search will be very confusing for you. You will be getting all sorts of ideas regarding all the above aspects and it will be very hard for you to make a sound decision.

We have discussed some differences between finding jobs working at home and finding a business idea working at home in another article. Therefore, we will not indulge in this discussion here.

In your search for finding ideas for working at home you have to be careful as there are a lot of empty claims and promises out there. The rule that you need to remember is; if it sounds too good to be true, then it most probably is too good to be true.

In this article we have tried to show you a systematic method that will enable you to find ideas for working at home that will enable you to avoid a possible confusion that might discourage you from continuing the journey.

Some of the rules complicated and not everyone can qualify, but if you do, savings are significant
If you are among the millions of homeowners and renters who operate a profitable part-time or full-time business from your home, don’t forget to claim your home-business tax deductions to reduce your income taxes. It doesn’t matter whether you are self-employed or an employee expected to work from home, such as an outside salesperson.

However, if your employer provides a suitable work space but you prefer working at home, then you don’t qualify for work-at-home tax deductions. For example, if you are a computer programmer who prefers to work from home so you can supervise your preschool child, you don’t qualify for home-business deductions.

If you are self-employed, to qualify for the Internal Revenue Code 280A home-business tax deductions, your residence must be used either 1) to meet with clients, customers or patients or 2) as your primary business location for administrative activity if you have no other fixed business location.

In 1999, Congress changed the tax law to allow self-employed people working from home to deduct business expenses if their residence is their primary business location. Examples include a bookkeeper who travels to offices of her clients, a handyman who works at various job sites and a computer repairman who services business offices during the week.

If you are a salaried employee working at home, the IRS imposes a special rule called “the convenience of the employer test.'’ You probably meet this test if your employer doesn’t provide suitable work space or expects you to work from home. Examples include outside salespeople and telephone order takers.

If you operate a part-time business from your residence and you can meet the “primary business location'’ or “convenience of the employer'’ tests, then part of your home operating costs are tax-deductible.

To illustrate, suppose you sell Avon, Amway or Mary Kay products from your home where you have an office and store inventory and supplies. Then you can qualify for the home-business tax deduction.

But your home use must be a business, not a hobby or investment. In the case of Joseph Moller, he earned 98 percent of his income from his investment business. He was a passive stock and bond investor operating from his living room. But the U.S. Court of Appeals denied his home-business deduction for investing which, the court said, was not a business.

If your full-time or part-time home business meets the rules explained above, the next test requires an “exclusive business area,'’ which is not also used for personal or family purposes. But the area need not be a separate room.

Part of a room can qualify, but it cannot be shared use. To illustrate, if you have your desk, filing cabinet and business supplies in one part of the family room, that area can qualify. However, using your kitchen table to operate your part-time bookkeeping business doesn’t qualify.

Your home-business tax deductions are determined by the percentage of your home’s square footage that is used for the exclusive business area.

For example, suppose you own or rent a 1,500-square-foot condo. One-third, or 500 square feet, is the business area where you conduct your work.

The result is 33 percent of applicable household expenses qualify as business tax deductions. If you are a renter, one-third of your rent is deductible on your business tax return. If you are a homeowner, one-third of applicable home expenses such as utilities, repairs, insurance, mortgage interest and property taxes will be deductible on your business tax return, in this example.

However, 100 percent of some expenses are fully deductible, such as your business telephone line (if you also have a personal telephone line), business computer broadband fees, and painting or improvement costs for the business area.

If you bought business equipment and placed it in service in 2006, such as a new computer and software, 100 percent of that equipment cost is deductible up to a maximum $108,000 deduction, with a maximum $25,000 deduction for an SUV vehicle used in your business.

If you own your home, the business area is depreciable. Using the example above, if your home-business area occupies 33 percent of your home’s square footage, then you can depreciate one-third of your residence’s cost basis (excluding non-depreciable land value) on a 39-year, commercial property, straight-line basis.

IRS Regulation 2002-142 says business use of your home won’t affect using the Internal Revenue Code 121 principal-residence-sale exclusion up to $250,000 ($500,000 for a married couple filing jointly). However, the total “business area'’ depreciation deducted must be taxed when the home is sold using the special 25 percent federal recapture tax rate.

Keep in mind, your home-business deductions, when subtracted from your home-business profit, cannot create a tax loss against your other ordinary taxable income. But unused home-business losses can be carried forward to future tax years. For full details, consult your tax adviser.

Stay-at-home moms? Yes. Businesswomen? Yes.
These are mompreneurs, a growing breed of women who not only stay home with the kids but also own companies, do work from home or contract their services.
There are an estimated 10 million mompreneurs in the United States, according to Patricia Cobe, who co-authored the book "Mompreneurs Online" and trademarked the term "mompreneur" 10 years ago after noticing a trend of moms wanting to have both worlds.
"It seems these moms, today’s moms, have more of a desire to stay home with kids than mothers in the previous generation," said Cobe. "With their mothers, there was this big push to stay in the corporate world. But they grew up in these families and really didn’t want that for their own kids."
But these moms still want some type of career, perhaps not just because they are ambitious but also because they need the income. The Internet has opened up countless opportunities for these women, and other companies have formed to cater to the mompreneur group.
One of them is Stroller Strides, a California-based company, which offers exercise classes for moms-to-be, moms with babies and moms with toddlers. It is based on power walking and strength training with resistance bands, and babies in strollers are part of the workout.
Carmel resident Melissa Kummings bought a franchise of Stroller Strides in 2005 to earn money while at home with daughter Trude, 7, and son Gus, 4.
Kummings had worked in a high-stress, high-travel job in California. But after moving to Indiana and having her children, she was ready for something else.
"I really wanted something that I loved to do, something I had a passion for," Kummings said. Since she loved exercise and fitness, Stroller Strides was perfect.
Kummings dedicates about 10 to 20 hours a week to her job and said if it took any more time than that, she wouldn’t do it. Three mornings a week, she teaches an hourlong class and spends the rest of her work time keeping up her Web site and dealing with corporate issues.
How does she do it all?
"It’s still challenging, because you’re broken into so many pieces," she said. "You have to know that you aren’t going to be perfect at either thing, and that’s OK."
Rita Fisher couldn’t agree more. She believes balance is a myth if you’re a mom and businesswoman.
Fisher, of Columbus, Ind., is the owner of ExecutiveCareer Pro.com, a company that writes resumes and cover letters for executives. She has two sons, Edison, 8, and Jackson, 5, and works 40 hours a week from home.
"I like to use the word priority," she said. "Whatever you put first or at the top of your list is what will get done."
Fisher has a bit of advice for moms who may want to venture into an at-home business.
"Only start it if you are really passionate about doing it," she said. On that note, she has started another venture, Smile Mailer.com. The service allows users to go to the Web site, fill out a form and have a greeting card mailed to anyone on their behalf. Fisher offers the service at no charge, as a ministry of sorts, using income from her for-profit business to fund it.
"If you really love what you do, you are going to do well at it," she said
